With the New Year comes reflection.
What could be different this year?
How could I improve? Optimize?
So far in 2018 I’ve read the usual articles and posts about goals:
Reams of digital ink explaining how to stick with the tried-and-true standards of weight loss, increased personal savings, regaining work-life balance or increasing “mindfulness.”
As you might expect, most people’s goals are fairly predictable.
A few years ago Reader’s Digest published the top 15 New Year’s Resolutions, based on a survey by the Nielsen company. You can find them here.
My personal resolutions for the year run the gamut from clichéd to unique – but include:
- Getting in shape
- Learning basic Spanish
- Writing more
Just over a week in, however, I think I’ve identified a better, singular resolution – from which all manner of good things will follow.
Wake up early.
Embrace 6:00 am.
Many folks have acknowledged that the most precious resource we have isn’t money – or even our health.
Our most precious resource is our time.
For instance, Inc. publicized a study last fall that showed adding 20 minutes to your daily commute makes you as miserable as receiving a 19 percent pay cut.
While I’m not sure I’d personally go that far, there is a very real price for our time – and our health, both mental and physical.
So what about 6:00 am?
Let’s work on the assumption that during the week your alarm clock goes off at 7:00 am, blasting you out of your slumber and imploring you to start the day.
Waking up one hour earlier could greatly increase your happiness.
By giving you an additional hour a day that you can use however you wish.
The magic of 6:00 am is it’s an hour where the world is still quiet…
An hour you can use as you please.
In that hour, you have control.
The power to explore hobbies, to begin the long journey towards mastery.
Write a novel…
Learn a language…
Unscheduled time can provide the respite from the demand and stresses of the rest of your day.
And therefore, set the tone – set you up for success.
So as you consider your resolutions for 2018 – the daily or weekly habits that will shape the person you’ll be on Jan. 1, 2019 …
Consider giving yourself an extra hour a day just for you.
Consider embracing 6:00 am.
